Wi-Fi 7 is about more than peak speed. The 802.11be standard also targets lower latency and more dependable connections in busy environments.
Important improvements
320 MHz channels increase bandwidth in the 6 GHz band where permitted. Multi-Link Operation coordinates links, 4K-QAM carries more data with a strong signal, and Multi-RU uses spectrum more flexibly.
When is an upgrade worthwhile?
Consider it for large local transfers, multi-gigabit internet, latency-sensitive gaming or streaming, and many compatible clients. With sub-gigabit service, better router placement or another access point may provide more value.
Router checklist
Check local 6 GHz availability, WAN and LAN port speeds, WPA3, the security-support period, and real coverage. Older clients remain compatible but cannot use every Wi-Fi 7 feature.
